There are plenty of outdoor activities in Houston, Texas, though if you plan to visit in the summer months, be prepared for hot weather and the occasional heavy rainstorms or even hurricanes. It’s wise to pay attention to the weather as you plan your outdoor excursions, to bring lots of sunscreen, protective clothing and sunglasses and to plan most of your outdoor activities for the earlier morning hours. This way you’ll get to see the lovely “outside” Houston has to offer and can save your visiting to air-conditioned indoor facilities for the afternoon.

There are a variety of parks in Houston, but none is more popular than Hermann Park. The Park was donated to the city in the early 20th century, but through neglect, was in terrible shape by the 1980s. At this point, the Herman Park Conservancy was formed to restore the park and make it one of the most beautiful places to visit in Houston. As well as taking a simple walk and watching wildlife, you’ll find a number of outdoor activities in Houston there.

These include:

  • Visiting the Houston Zoo
  • Playing Golf
  • Visiting the Japanese Tea Garden
  • Finding the many Historical Monuments
  • Viewing the geyser at McGovern Lake
  • Visiting the Cockrell Butterfly Center

If you enjoy amusement parks or water parks, Houston has plenty to offer. Consider a visit to Six Flags Astroworld to ride one or more of their eleven roller coasters, plus many other thrill rides and rides for the kids. Alternately, if you want to cool off while pursuing outdoor activities in Houston, consider a trip to Adventure Bay Water Park, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

If you’re looking for outdoor activities in Houston that offer fantastic entertainment, be sure to check the schedule for Houston’s Miller Outdoor Theater. During the summer months, you’ll find a variety of different programs from performances by the symphony to plays for the whole family. The evening performances may be most comfortable, since the weather tends to stay warm well into the night.

Another of the great indoor and outdoor activities in Houston is a visit to the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens. While you can tour the historic house left to Houston by Miss Ima Hogg, which features many objects of historical interest in addition to a lovely architectural design, one of the principal attractions is the gorgeous gardens designed by Hogg. You can appreciate over eight separate gardens during a trip to Bayou Bend, and also take guided tours (reservations recommended), of the home and some of the gardens.

Visitors should also be certain to take advantage of the one of the most eclectic outdoor activities in Houston by taking a walk through the Orange Show. The Orange Show features a 3000 square foot work of steel architecture, built like a maze. During the walk you’ll find many points of interest, including a wishing well and an oasis. There’s also an indoor museum and gift shop if you want to escape the heat for a few minutes. The Orange Show offers a unique way to pursue outdoor activities in Houston, unlike anything else you’re likely to see in the city.
